Eating in Krabi in 2026 means choosing between two very different price worlds. Ao Nang’s beachfront menus keep creeping upward, while a short ride away, Krabi Town and the coast road still serve the same southern-style meals at half the price. This guide shows you which area suits which meal, so you stop paying beach-view prices for an average plate of fried rice.

Krabi Town: Night Markets and Morning Stalls

Krabi Town is where you eat cheaply and well. It sits about 20 km from Ao Nang, and most visitors only pass through on the way to the pier. That is a mistake for food.

The Krabi Town Weekend Night Market on Chao Fah Road runs Friday to Sunday from late afternoon until about 10 pm. Come around 6 pm, when the grills are fully lit. The smell of charcoal chicken skewers, sweet grilled pork, and frying banana fritters drifts down the whole street. Order from the stalls with a queue of locals, not the ones with a laminated English menu out front.

For breakfast, walk to the fresh market near the town centre before 8 am. Stalls sell southern curries by the scoop, usually over rice or thin rice noodles with a pile of raw vegetables on the side. Most plates cost 40–60 THB, and the curries are noticeably spicier than in the tourist zones. Say “mai phet” (not spicy) if you are unsure.

The riverside area near the Krabi Town pier has a row of casual restaurants with open-air seating. They are good for a late lunch before or after a boat trip, and prices stay close to local levels.

Ao Nang: Beachfront Strip vs. Back Sois

Ao Nang is the busiest dining area in Krabi, and the quality varies enormously. The rule is simple: the closer you sit to the sand, the more you pay.

The beachfront road has dozens of seafood and grill restaurants with fish displayed on ice. They are fine for a sunset drink and a view of the limestone cliffs turning orange, but cook times and portion sizes can disappoint. If you want the view, eat here once and order simple things like grilled prawns or fish by weight. Always confirm the price per 100 g before the fish goes on the grill.

The better value is one or two streets back. The small Thai restaurants along the sois running inland from the main road serve curries, stir-fries, and noodle dishes for 80–150 THB. Many are family-run with six or seven tables, and the cook is often the owner.

The Ao Nang Night Market is a practical option for a casual dinner. It mixes Thai street food with seafood grills and desserts, and it has plenty of seating. It is less local than Krabi Town, but it is walkable from most Ao Nang hotels.

Pro Tip: In 2026, many Ao Nang restaurants add a 10% service charge and sometimes 7% VAT on top of menu prices. Check the bottom of the menu before ordering. If a seafood place will not give a written price per 100 g, walk to the next one.

Ao Nam Mao: Seafood on the Water

Ao Nam Mao is a small bay about 10 km from Krabi Town, on the road toward Ao Nang. It is the best place in the area for seafood served over the water. Several restaurants stand on stilts above the mudflats and mangroves. At high tide, you eat with water lapping beneath the wooden floor.

Go in the late afternoon. As the light turns gold over the mangroves, the kitchens start firing up steamed crab, garlic prawns, and whole fish with lime and chilli sauce. A shared meal for two usually lands at 700–1,200 THB, which is clearly lower than comparable seafood on Ao Nang’s beach road.

It is also a quieter area. Tour groups are fewer, and the pace is slow. You will usually need your own transport or a pre-arranged taxi, since evening songthaews thin out after about 8 pm.

Railay and Tonsai: Eating Without Roads

Railay is reached only by longtail boat, so every ingredient arrives the same way you do. That pushes prices up. Expect 30–50% more than Ao Nang for the same dish.

  • Railay West: Beachfront restaurants with sunset views, better for drinks and a light dinner.
  • Railay East: Small cafés and noodle shops near the mangrove walkway. Cheaper and more relaxed.
  • Tonsai: A climbers’ hangout with simple bungalow restaurants, hearty portions, and low prices by Railay standards.

Plan your return boat before dinner. Longtails from Railay West stop running in the evening, and late rides cost more. Many visitors eat an early dinner, around 5:30 pm, and leave before dark. If you stay overnight, the walk between Railay West and Railay East takes about 10 minutes, so you can compare menus on foot.

Klong Muang and Tubkaek: Quiet Beach Dining

North of Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Tubkaek have a calmer coastline with resort restaurants and a few independent beach cafés. They are about 25 minutes from Ao Nang by car. This is where you go for a long, slow meal on the sand without the crowds.

Most dining here sits inside or beside resorts, and many welcome non-guests. Expect mid-range pricing: 250–500 THB for a main dish. Sunset is the best time, when the sea turns pink and the longtail boats sit still on the water. Book ahead on weekends and in high season, since seating is limited.

2026 Krabi Food Budget

Prices have risen slightly since 2024, especially in Ao Nang and Railay. These are typical per-person daily food costs in 2026:

  • Budget (300–500 THB/day): Market breakfast (40–60 THB), a street or night-market dinner (80–150 THB), and a cheap local lunch (60–100 THB). Mostly Krabi Town and Ao Nang back sois.
  • Mid-range (600–1,200 THB/day): Café breakfast (120–200 THB), a sit-down lunch (150–250 THB), and a seafood or grill dinner (300–600 THB).
  • Comfortable (1,500–3,000+ THB/day): Resort breakfast, beachfront dinners in Klong Muang or Railay West, and shared seafood platters.

A cold beer costs 70–120 THB at casual places and 120–180 THB at beachfront venues. Fresh fruit shakes run 50–90 THB.

Getting Between Eating Areas in 2026

Krabi has no metro or train, so transport shapes your food plans. Songthaews run between Krabi Town and Ao Nang during the day, usually for 50–100 THB per person, but services thin out in the evening. Ride-hailing apps work in parts of the area, though drivers sometimes cancel during peak hours. Taxis from Ao Nang to Krabi Town cost around 500–800 THB each way.

Renting a scooter costs about 200–300 THB per day and gives you the most freedom for Ao Nam Mao and Klong Muang. Drive carefully at night, since the coast roads have few streetlights.

Krabi’s airport now handles more flights than it did in 2024, so arrival days are busier. If you land in the evening, eat in Ao Nang or Krabi Town rather than rushing to a remote beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the cheapest food in Krabi?

Krabi Town has the lowest prices. The fresh market and the weekend night market on Chao Fah Road serve full meals for 40–150 THB. In Ao Nang, walk one or two streets back from the beach for local-priced noodle shops and rice-and-curry restaurants.

Is seafood in Krabi safe and good value?

Yes, if you choose busy restaurants where the seafood is on ice and the turnover is high. Ao Nam Mao generally offers better value than Ao Nang’s beachfront. Always agree on a price per 100 g before cooking so the final bill has no surprises.

What is the best area in Krabi for beachfront dining?

Ao Nang has the most choice, but Klong Muang and Railay West offer nicer settings. Klong Muang is calmer and resort-style. Railay West has dramatic cliff views and sunsets but higher prices because everything arrives by boat.

Do I need to book restaurants in Krabi?

Most casual places take walk-ins. Book ahead for resort restaurants in Klong Muang and for beachfront tables in Railay West or Ao Nang at sunset, particularly from December to February. A quick message through the restaurant’s social media or phone usually works.

How much should I budget for food per day in Krabi?

Budget travellers can eat well on 300–500 THB per day, mid-range visitors typically spend 600–1,200 THB, and those dining at beachfront resorts should plan on 1,500 THB or more. Costs are highest in Railay and on Ao Nang’s beach road.
